Hey there,

I'll be returning to Poett Nook again in August this year and would like to try some prawning this time. I've never done it before and was wondering if anyone could provide me some tips on type of trap to purchase, most effective bait, how much line I might require and where the best places to soak them around the Nook. Thanks so much!

Hi Fly boy:
Prawning can be done with a variety of traps from the commercial style to the fold up types. The one you use depends on how much space you have available in your boat or rig for storage. All types work. I would recommend at least 500' of line for a set of two traps. Remember if you have more than two traps on a set you will require two bouys/floats one attached at either ends of the set, so you would need considerably more line if you do that. The setting of the traps themselves should be in water that is minimally 250' deep or deeper. You will see the traps all around the Nook and the area close to us in Barclay sound. Canned cat food seems to be the bait favoured by most, It can be purchased at the store. Have fun

use carlyle cat food & prawn bait with liquid fish scent. we use one trap per line 240 ft. to 450 ft. let soak at least 2 hrs.

Note that is next to impossible to find Carlyle cat food in Port Alberni right now. Everyone is out. There is some at the Nook but unless the supply gets caught up - who knows when we can get it again
Everyone is waiting for their orders to come in for over a month now

Is it worth bringing a couple prawn traps in August? A friend of mine told me not to bother and said that prawning isn't any good in August. However, he's not right quite often so I'd like to get some feedback from those that really know. Thanks for any advise you can give.

Yes it is worth it, the areas close to the Nook may have been worked over, however there are plenty of spots close by where prawns can be found - have fun
